The Expansion We’ve All Been Waiting For

21 08 2014

So, earlier this week Fantasy Flight announced the newest expansion to the X-Wing miniatures game: the Scum & Villainy faction. As some who thinks Boba Fett and the Mandaloreans are the coolest part of the lore, I couldn’t be happier. My fluff runneth over. Also, look at the shiny:

The newly-announced Wave VI will include the Black Sun StarViper, the MandalMotors M3-A Interceptor, and the large-based IG-2000—with ridiculous handling that can only be performed by the assassin droid IG-88 and his ilk. It will also include an expansion pack big box called “Most Wanted” that will allow you to play a bunch of rebel ships as Scum.

However, I need to point out that the cynical side of me (which is pretty much all of me) also looks at this entire faction as a way to fix Boba Fett. Exhibit A: that new big box which includes a few specially painted ships and cards to run other models in the new faction.

See that 4th pilot card on the top row? That’s Boba Fett. Need a better look? Here:

None of this over-cost movement shenanigans. Now we get a Boba Fett we can believe in! Rockets, bombs, canons, a crew member, elite pilot upgrade, and of course the new illicit technologies upgrade. It’s like Wookie Life Day in August! I’m just hoping we also get a Dengar card, but because that guy was legit and I’m a bit upset that we’ve seen freaking Porkins before we’ve seen our cybernetically-enhanced bounty hunter friend. Regardless, I think that the Boba Fett pilot card is going to be worth the price of admission.

Getting back to that big box of power-correcting goodness, the Scum & Villainy starter box (as I’ll probably call it) comes with three ships: two alternately coloured Headhunters and an alt Y-Wing. I can understand why Fantasy Flight went this way; and truth be told, I don’t own a Y-Wing or a Headhunter so I’ll be glad to wait for them in the new box.

However, the hallmark of pirates and mercenaries in the Extended Universe are Uglies. That is, ships made up of whatever can be scavenged. I am hoping down the line we see monstrous creations born of the illicit unions of TIE and X-Wing. Horrible ships that serve as the ultimate class canons or perhaps over-armoured transport vessels. I’m even hoping for ship text that includes random die rolls to see if the damn things just blow up. Too GW? Maybe. But a man can dream!

April Warmachine Wrap-Up

3 05 2014

Despite the end of the university term and my recent obsession with Super Dungeon Explore, I did manage to slap some paint on Warmahordes models this past month. What? Warmahordes? Indeed.

First up we have a mini unit of the Gatorman Posse. I picked these fellows up last year on a leftover sale at my FLG. I had left them half-finished until this month. I’ve tried to use water effect with some ink to make a swampy base —which is completely lost in the shot except for a previous unnoticed mistake right in the front of the leader. *sigh*

Next up is the Boneswarm light warbeast. It was likewise picked up on a sale. I tried to paint it following the Incorporeal Tutorial I linked to back in January. What I discovered was that you should stop two steps earlier. The model was gorgeous after the following steps:

  • Basecoat Ice Blue
  • Wash with Thraka Green
  • Wash with Asumen Blue
  • Drybrush with white (I used Vallejo Primer White)

Unfortunately, I then washed it again with green and blue. And so, we have the following result:

Not horrible, but not what I wanted either. I’d be more upset, but I considered this model a test of Alexia and the Risen. I will eventually paint up two batches of Risen using the colour scheme above. Mwahahahah.

Finally, we have Eiryss, Mage Hunter of Ios. Apparently painting up a model with snowy camouflage pattern will be worth 5 league points for Purists in Halfaug. I looked at several tutorials and tried my best, but she still looks a bit… wrong. I iced the base like my Khador but used my standard Merc front arc colour scheme. If it weren’t for the fact that I literally have more points to paint than I have painted, I would probably throw here in a Simple Green bath. As it is, I’ll just grin and bear it.

So that’s all for Warmahordes for the month of April. Hopefully I’ll get two some more Stonehaven miniatures in May. I’ve still got a shitload of gnomes left to paint from the last kickstarter, and I’ll be getting my shipment of Elves sometime this month.

February Wrap-up

28 02 2014

I’ve been involved in the 2014 painting challenge over on the Privateer Press Forum. Here’s what I painted for Warmachine in the short and cold month of February.

First up, is one of the two  Winter Guard Mortar Crews I need for Harkevich’s 4th tier. I tried to work a bit with snowdrifts on these. There’s also some nice patina on the mortar itself. I need to paint a second one of these for tiers, so I might mod the poses. We’ll see.

Next up is Koldum Kapitan Valachev. While all my Khador has the front arc marked with ice, I used the gradient purple of my mercs here so as to help show his dual role. He’s by no means perfect but suitable for tabletop.

Finally, we have the Ogrun Bokur. I hated to have to elevate this guy; but I was having a horrible time getting him on base, even with pins. So, he’s standing on cork covered with several kinds of flock. I’m happy with the model, but the base really pisses me off. He’ll probably be a staple for whatever the other list is I run this year (probably eIrusk or pSorcha with tons of mercs).

Next month will be focused on warjacks. I have a plastic Beast 09 mod primed; I’m about 90% on modding a metal Devastator into a Demolisher; and I have a second metal Devastator that I need to assemble as well. That will amount to 29 points if I can get my act together.

Oh, and I have an Ork Blood Bowl team I need to work on if I can find the time….

January Wrap-up

27 01 2014

While January was abysmal in terms of game playing, I did manage to get a few things painted.

First off, Lady Aiyana and Master Holt:

Then there is a minimum unit of MoW Demo Corp (modded from plastic Shock Troopers):

Finally, I worked on a small display board (seen behind & under the models above). It was a proof-of-concept piece more than anything else, but I’ll put a brief tutorial up on it in the next day or so.

Lady Aiyana and Master Holt WIP

20 01 2014

Did some work on Master Holt today.

For some reason I always think of Holt as a bit of a dandy—he keeps close to Lady A in the hopes that his natural charm and martial prowess will woo her. And yet, it is an unrequited love. I partially chose yellow for Holt because I read somewhere that it is the colour of the cuckold. I imagine poor Holt obsessively cleaning his firearms in some backwater inn near Korsk while sounds of Aiyana’s amorous liaisons filter in through the walls of their adjoining rooms.

Too far? Perhaps.

Not sure about the colours yet, but I’m making progress on everyone’s favourite elf lady.
